The 'spur boxes' are specially engineered from a brass block and incorporate a tensioned steel spring, which has the dual purpose of keeping the door closed when no spur is inserted and also acts as a retaining spring to keep the spur in place.

The spurs click into place held by the retaining spring, no force should be necessary. The spur boxes are intentionally offset at 5 degrees left and right to prevent spurs injuring the horse. The arms may have to be opened out a little to fit the boot heel properly. The spurs are quite soft and should not be excessively forced or they will break.
